Alameda County Board of Education hearing regarding Aurum Charter School, Tuesday, April 11, 2017, 1 pm – Aurum’s charter was rejected nearly unanimously by our School Board in December for failing to present a sound educational or financial plan, among other reasons. On Tuesday, April 11th, the petition will be in front of the Alameda County Board of Education for their consideration. As you know, California Charter Law unfairly and undemocratically overrules the local control of school board’s the manage the educational programs of their districts by allowing charter schools to appeal rejections, first to the County and then the State, who can then authorize the placement of a charter school in Oakland. It is imperative that the County Board of Education hear from Oakland families opposing the opening of this charter school in our community. There are many reasons why Aurum should not be operating in Oakland, but the County Board is limited in what arguments it can consider. We have prepared a draft letter here which you can modify to reflect your concerns and send it to the Alameda County Board members listed here. Please take a minute to send the email by Monday at noon to ensure that the board has adequate time to consider it.

OPEN training with Jitu Brown and Journey for Justice, Saturday, April 15, 2017, 9 am to 5 pm – Jitu Brown is an inspiring community organizer and advocate for public schools from Chicago, and the Director of Journey 4 Justice. Oakland is lucky that OPEN – Oakland’s Public Education Network, a founding member of the Journey for Justice Alliance (“J4J”) has arranged for Jitu and other J4J members to come to Oakland on April 15 for a training on organizing and coalition building for public education. The Journey for Justice Alliance last year called for a moratorium on charter schools as part of its Education platform (which you can read here) and this year has launched its #WeChoose campaign for education equity, not the illusion of school choice. Parents United for Public Schools members, and all who support equitable public education, are invited to join in this training on Saturday, April 15th from 9 am to 5 pm at McClymonds High School, 2607 Myrtle Street. Registration is $25 for adults or $20 for students and includes the all day training, breakfast and lunch – please print and fill out the registration form and follow the instructions on the bottom to sign up. This is a really amazing opportunity to take action in the face of Donald Trump, Betsy Devos and others who threaten our public schools.
